The Kindle is an electronic book display. Kindle owners don't need to buy traditional paper books - they can download books directly to their Kindle (no computer required) and read them on the Kindle screen. They can do this from most metropolitan areas of the United States.
It is produced by Amazon, an on-line retailer that sells many types of goods, but which came to fame as the largest on-line seller of books.
The Kindle currently retails for $399 from Amazon.com .
Books are downloaded over a wireless network, and access to the network is free. Each book however is not free - new releases are around $10 and classics are around $2.
The display screen is a new technology that provides a much better reading experience than a traditional computer screen. The technical term for it is "electrophoretic display", otherwise known as e-paper or "electronic paper". The major difference between e-paper and a traditional computer screen is that e-paper reflects light like ordinary paper. This means it can be read in any place that a traditional book would be read - for instance in bright sunlight.
